Tom Paine Printing Press - Sussex

After visiting the Peter Chasseaud exhibition at the Here Gallery in Bristol, I decided to check out the Printing Press Gallery and Shop in Lewes whilst I'm home in Sussex for a short Easter break. The Gallery has monthly exhibitions of work by contemporary printmakers,

whilst the shop stocks a wide range of Press publications, cards, prints and a range of books about typography.

I saw lots of the work that I recognised from the exhibition in Bristol and a lot of new stuff too...type and ornament specimen posters, books printed entirely using the press and work that was much more illustration based than I had previously seen. They even had a small collection of Chinese letterpress characters! I particularly liked the small collection of artists books, all of them seemed to be produced in a different format to the last.

Here Gallery - Peter Chasseaud

Along with fellow student Joseph Allison, I took a break from my computer screen today and cycled up to Here Gallery in Stokes Croft. We had a look around at Peter Chasseaud's work, an exhibition of hand pressed typographical prints produced by the Tom Paine Printing Press in Lewes, Sussex. It was quite interesting since Joe and I are both originally from Sussex,but it is the first time we had heard of the association. It's definitely worth a visit while I'm back home in Sussex for the Easter break.

The work exhibited was pretty impressive, I particularly liked the large scale books about London's Rail Network. I also loved the small printed symbols on the work and wish that I had the opportunity to use them in my work.  

Your Town

For my self-directed study I have asked myself the question, what is England? I am attempting to look at the country for what it is, what it consists of. I am exploring things both physical and sociological using a number of different methods. I identified early on that it would be impossible for me to personally travel round and explore the country in the time frame given, so I came up with a solution. I made contact with a number of people who live in different places throughout the country. I have sent them each a disposable camera with a list of instructions on what to capture, and a questionnaire asking them about their town. So far I have received one reply which is currently being developed...I am very excited to see the results!

Bath Spa

After the stresses of last weeks deadline I decided to take a day out from doing work to clear my head and be able to start again fresh. When I visited Bath for our 'Lingua Franca' project in the first semester I promised myself I would go back again and explore the city more. So I did!It was so refreshing to go new places and see new things and I felt like I haven't taken photographs in ages so it was a good chance to play with my camera too. Lovely day!

ISTD Student Assessment 2011

After a horrendously stressful final week I submitted my work to the International Society of Typographic Designers for their 2011 Student Assessments. It has been without a doubt the hardest few weeks of my entire time at uni, full of sleepless nights, tears and lots of Coca Cola and Malteaser Bunnies to get me through! I'm pleased with my outcome, but it is now in the hands of the judges and will be a few weeks until we hear anything back!

I completed a brief called 'Fakery', and chose to look at False Memories and the controversy and confusion that surrounds them. My final outcome was a series of four screen printed posters displaying cases studies of false memories, accompanied by a 32 page perfect bound book explaining what they are and the debate that surrounds them. The posters were screen printed with pearlescent ink onto off-white paper to make the writing accessible only in certain lights. This was to reflect the idea that to discover the truth in a false memory or confabulation the therapist must work to access it, like the reader must work to access the truth on my poster.
